MOULDS FOR METALS

A carburettor body is typical of the sort of complex metal part that can be effectively made by a die-casting die. Soft metal such as aluminium or zinc is melted and forced into the die cavity under pressure through channels in the die called "runners." The molten metal cools and hardens quickly and finished hardened parts are removed when the die opens. Since the metal in the runners also hardens, the runner must be trimmed from the finished part.
Molds for metals are often referred to as die-casting dies.
