TASA PRESIDENT WELCOMES ISTMA DELEGATES TO 2008 ISTMA AGM



Gauteng Provincial Government and TASA have invited ISTMA general manager to come to South Africa and to review locally the preparations and the program for next 2008 ISTMA AGM with the large professional team that is preparing the event. This was also an opportunity to meet with TASA officials, including TASA President, Bob Williamson (in the photo, close to the emblematic Mandela statue in Mandela Square, very close to the Convention Centre where meetings will happen).

GAUTENG PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT SPONSORS 2008 ISTMA ANNUAL MEETING IN JOAHNNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA



TASA, the South Africa association, will host the 2008 ISTMA Annual Assembly, next 29th June / 2nd July, in Johannesburg. This is the first ISTMA meeting in an African country and Gauteng Provincial Government is sponsoring the event, including covering the local costs of the meeting. ISTMA ASIA / FADMA 2008 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING



More than 25 delegates from ten different Asian countries attended the 2008 Annual General Meeting of ISTMA Asia / Fadma, chaired by Mr. N. Reguraj. The meeting was hosted by CDMIA, the China association, in Shanghai, last 11-13 May. Mr Cao Yanan has now retired from General Secretary of CDMIA China Die & Mould Industry Association, and became CDMIA Vice President.

ISTMA ASIA / FADMA MEMBERS IN THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE 12th DIE & MOULD EXHIBITION, IN SHANGHAI (CHINA)



CDMIA organized a very successful 12th Die & Mould Exhibition (www.diemouldchina.com), from to May 2008, with more than 1300 exhibitors and 70 thousand square meters of indoors area. More than one hundred thousand people visited the exhibition. ISTMA Asia / Fadma members had a relevant role in the opening ceremony of the exhibition.

2008 NTMA CONVENTION



USA tooling business community has met in Florida (St. Petersburg) last February (2nd to 6th) with a full program. NTMA made some of the presentations available through the Conference Hall of this website (click here for direct link).

7th AUTOMOTIVE TOOLING SEMINAR 2008 (Sweden)



Uddeholm has organized the 7th Automotive Tooling Seminar, in Sune (Sweden), last 6th to 9th February 2008. Again the event was an opportunity discuss the latest news and findings within the automotive industry, as well as to see some special stages of the Uddeholm Swedish Rally, for the World Championship. ISTMA has contributed for the TDM (tools, dies and moulds) workshop.
Kenny Brack, the swedish driver that won the Year 1999 Indy 500 (USA, and the only european to have won the Indy 500 championship, and who later survived the most dramatic accident in Indy history, made a challenging presentation about leadership, career and high competition. Read more ...

ISTMA AMERICAS MET IN FLORIDA AND RELEASES NEW BUSINESS CONDITIONS REPORT



ISTMA Americas has met during NTMA 2008 Convention in St. Petersburg (Florida). Minutes are available in the Regional Meetings option of the members only section of website. The meeting adressed issues related to the business conditions collection procedures and discussed planning for next 2010 ISTMA World Conference, to be held in Windsor (Canada) and to be organised by CTMA.
Meanwhile ISTMA Americas has released the report relative to business conditions in the second semester 2007. Historical data series for Americas business conditions have also been updated (per country, type of tooling and global for Americas). ISTMA EUROPE DINNER IN FRANKFURT



ISTMA Europe organized a very well attended dinner in Frankurt, last 4th December (along with the Euromold exhibition). The informal meeting was also intended to transfer the Presidency of the Europe branch from Joaquim Menezes (from Cefamol, Portugal, and now acting President of ISTMA) to Fausto Romagnani (from UCISAP, Italy). Fausto has also presented the program for his mandate.
ISTMA Europe next meeting will be held in Zurich, next 20th to 22nd April.

ISTMA EUROPE NEW PRESIDENT



Fausto Romagnani, from UCISA (Italy) took over the presidency of ISTMA Europe regional branch, from last December. Fausto was vice president of ISTMA Europe under the presidency of Joaquim Menezes (from Cefamol, Portugal). Mr Menezes is now the president of ISTMA.

ISTMA/TAGMA SEMINAR IN BANGALORE



TAGMA organized in Bangalore a successful seminar with tooling companies, following the Board of Directors meeting. Seminar was held in on 30th October, at the Chanakya Hall of Hotel Grand Ashok. Theme was the global tooling markets and the ongoing changes of the tooling business TAGMA President opened the session. ISTMA President has been the first speaker. ISTMA general manager then presented a review of the world tooling markets and trends. Harry Moser, from ISTMA Americas, also presented the view from Americas about changes in the world markets. An open discussion and dinner followed.

UDDEHOLM: FIRTS ISTMA GLOBAL PARTNER



ISTMA and Uddeholm Tooling AB (www.uddeholm.com, from Sweden), represented by the President of ISTMA and by Laurent Maradon, have signed the memo of understanding concerning Uddeholm adhesion to the new ISTMA Global Partner Program, designed to improve cooperation between tooling industry and global suppliers. “We are glad to have finalized the agreement relating ISTMA and Uddeholm even closer”, said L. Marandon. The document was signed during the dinner before the European Tooling Forum, in Lisbon, last 13th September.

EUROPEAN TOOLING FORUM (LISBON)



ISTMA Europe organized a very important get together of European companies, national and EU community policy and decision makers, R&D and innovation institutions in order to discuss the competitiveness and strategic importance of the European tooling industry. The meetings has been held in Lisbon, last 14th of September and it contributes to the reinforcement of the image of the tooling industry in the policy making circles of Europe governance. NTMA 2007 FALL CONFERENCE



“Filling the pipeline... Building a skilled, productive and loyal workforce for the future” is the theme for the 2007 NTMA Fall Conference, to be held in Pittsburgh, next October, 10th to 14th. AMERICAS BUSINESS CONDITIONS (1H 2007)



ISTMA Americas has released the business conditions survey do the first half of 2007. The report is available in the members only section of the site, option Business conditions. USA and Canada data shows a better performance for machining shops and a more volatile and less optimistic view for mould and tool shops. Canada data suggests that a recovery is now under way, after e very bad 1st half 2006. Argentina has also contributed for this survey.

12th ISTMA WORLD CONFERENCE HELD IN JOENSUU (FINLAND):
A SUCCESS



Delegates from 27 different countries has been present for the last ISTMA Word Conference , held in Joensuu, last 11th to 13th June. More than 170 participants had a rich program of technical and business presentations by experts from all the world, and a very attractive program of visits and events.
Photos (slideshows) from the event and the final program of the event are available in the World Conference page. The papers and some of the presentations will be soon available in the Conference Hall section of the site.The new ISTMA Terminology webservice has been announced during the event. The event has been very successfully organized by Teknologia Teollisuus (Technology Industries of Finland), the ISTMA association in Finland, together with Imtec and Joenssuu Science Park, Ld. Next ISTMA World Conference will be held in Windsor (Canada), organized by CTMA.during 2010.

NTMA 2007 LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE IN WASHINGTON, DC (USA)



NTMA (USA) runned a very succesfull NTMA 2007 Legislative Conference, last 13th and 14th June, in Washington, D.C.. The conference targeted to the US Congress and Senate members and conveyed the tooling industries concerns directly to them, and promoted an opportunity for direct links between NTMA members and the leaders and regulators who make important decisions regarding the tooling industry in a daily basis.The theme for this year event is "Our workforce is our future: taking the message to Washington".

VISIT TO GRITECH OY INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM OF WORLD CONFERENCE



Participants in the World Conference will have the opportunity to visit the famous automated toolshop previously operated by Perlos Tools. Gritech Oy (www.gritech.fi) expanded substantially in spring 2007 when it acquired the Perlos shop in Joensuu as part of a MBO operation. Perlos Tools' mechanisation subcontracts and mould business will continue under Gritech-Tools. They are operating with the same machinery as Perlos and they welcome the ISTMA delegates for a factory visit. More details here.

INTERNATIONAL FAIR IN BURSA (TURKEY)



International Mould Manufacturers Union, from Turkey, organized a successful 2nd Bursa Mould Technologies and Side Industry Fair 2007, in the industrial city of Bursa (www.bursakalip.com). The president of the Union opened the event (see photo)
The event attracted companies not only from Turkey but also from Asia and Europe. The Union application for ISTMA membership was already endorsed by ISTMA Europe and will be voted next assembly in Finland. ISTMA general manager has been invited for the opening session of the event. Read more …

ANNUAL APPRENTICE COMPETITION (USA)



NTMA Precision (USA) organized the 35th National Apprentice Competition, in Pittsburg, PA., from 9 to 12 May. The best machining and tool and die maker apprentices in the country converged to the city of Champions. Jeremy Graff (see photo, during the contest), from Sipco Molding Technologies, of Meadville (northwestern Pennsylvania) won the 35th annual national skills contest. More information here and here.

NEW ISTMA ASIA / FADMA OFFICERS



Last FADMA / ISTMA Asia meeting in Singapore (29th March 2007) elected new office bearers. Mr. N. Reguraj, from TAGMA (India) is the new Chairman. Mr Reguraj is the also the managing director of NTTF Industries Ltd. (NTTF stands for Nettur Technical Training Foundation).
Mr. Kim Dong-Sup (from KODMIC, Korea) and Mr. Katsuhiro Ueda (from JADMA, Japan) are the vice-chairmen. Mr. Albert Cheng (from MMADA, Malaysia) is the treasurer.

SPETA 25th ANNIVERSARY



SPETA Singapore Precision Engineering and Tooling Association celebrated its 25th anniversary in a industry night celebration during last MTA 2007 (The precision engineering industry event, 17th edition).
Speta chairman, Dr. Felix Ong, welcomed all the participants, and the guest of honour, Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Minister of State for Trade and Industry, addressed the meeting. NTMA RELEASED THE WINTER 2007 FORECAST REPORT AND MAKES IT AVAILABLE TO THE ISTMA MEMBERS



NTMA produces three times per year the NTMA Business/Customer Forecast Report which contains important information regarding business conditions in the U.S. tooling and machining industry. This important document is available to ISTMA members in the private section of the ISTMA web site (see Business conditions option in the menu, members only).
“Consumer spending generally has remained solid during 2006. Capital spending for most industry sectors continues to move high. Added to that is the weakened dollar has finally started to boost exports”. The report includes sales index (relative to 1990, including 2007 projections) of tools, dies and fixtures / molds / special machines and also for different specialized areas (precision machining, aerospace, motor vehicles and parts, electronic components, aircraft and engines, household appliances, aerospace, construction and farm machinery, equipment for semiconductors and medical instruments), as well as capacity use rates.

UDDEHOLM AUTOMOTIVE SEMINAR 2007



2007 Uddeholm Automotive Seminar was held in Sunne, last February (from 8 to 11th). ISTMA general manager has addressed the meeting and discussed the tooling business industry trends and markets. The presentation is available for ISTMA members in the members- only section, home page of the site. It includes a systemic analysis of the international trade and large world markets for tooling (including both tools, dies and industrial moulds).
A “Tools, dies and moulds workshop” was held in February 8th, during the Uddeholm Automotive Seminar. It has been a good opportunity to discuss the increasing demands of car producers relative to tooling and to network. A summary of the discussion is made available (see pdf).

2nd HALF 2006 BUSINESS CONDITIONS REPORTS RELEASED BY ISTMA EUROPE SECRETARIAT



One hundred sixty different companies from ten different countries in Europe have contributed to the business conditions report for the second semester 2006. Europe global indice for tooling (both diemakers and mouldmakers) went from 38% to 31%, consequence of a decrease in the share of companies reporting “very good” conditions and a increase in the “fair” conditions group. The indice for diemakers alone went up again for five consecutive semesters. As usual, the index for mouldmakers shows a higher volatility. ISTMA AMERICAS MEETING IN SAN DIEGO



Americas regional branch met last 6th February in San Diego (USA), in parallel with NTMA Convention. World Congress issues were discussed, as well as possible new members. Minutes are available in the new Regional meetings option of the members only menu.

ISTMA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MET IN FRANKFURT



ISTMA Executive Committee met last 30th November 2006, in Frankfurt, in the VDMA headquarters. The meeting was chaired by ISMA President, Jean Louis Rabourdin.
The committee discussed the 2006 report and 2007 plan presented by the general manager and made important decisions about the ISTMA Global Partners program, multiple memberships by country and the statutes revision. The terminology revision project and the statistics new formats were also discussed. The minutes and documents discussed are available in the members only section of the site.

ISTMA EVENT IN EUROMOLD 2006


ISTMA Europe coordinated an ISTMA a seminar about "Tooling industry: changes and market trends" during Euromold, in Frankfurt (Germany), last 1st December.
Program included an overview of aerospace supply chain for tooling by Daniel Pyzak, from Dassault Systems, as well as presentation about India market by V. Kovaichelvan, HR & TQM vice president, TVS Motor Co. Ltd., India. First, the ISTMA general manager made a presentation about “The global tooling industry: changes and trends”. The session was closed by ISTMA Europe President, Joaquim Menezes

ISTMA EUROPE MEETING IN BERGAMO (ITALY)



Last ISTMA Europe meeting in Bergamo, last 23rd and 24th November was as a good opportunity to review the branch business and to approve important proposals for the next ISTMA Executive Meeting. The meeting was held in the Confindustria Bergamo excellent meeting rooms and facilities in Bergamo and it has been organized bu UCISAP, the Italian ISTMA affiliate.

ISTMA EUROPE BUSINESS INDEX IMPROVES IN THE FIRST HALF OF 2006



ISTMA Europe has released the data of the business conditions survey in the first semester 2006. Results show a sharp improvement in the business conditions index reported by mouldmakers (from 35% to 37%) and a small improvement in the european diemakers index (from 34% to 35%).
ISTMA new format for presentation of the business conditions surveys, including all the historical data series, as been updated with 2006/1 data and it is available at the european level and by country level in the members only section of the website. Meanwhile the statistics and business conditions options in the menu of been splited, in order to make information more easily available and read.

STAMPI & Co. CONGRESS IN ITALY



"STAMPI & Co.: the future of the sector. Global panels and prospects of development" is the theme of the congress that UCISAP, the ISTMA association from Italy, is organising next 22 November 2006, in Milan.
The meeting will pay special attention to the changes in the market from the viewpoint of tooling companies, their customers and their suppliers.

The Slovenia association has released the final program for the Orodjarstvo 2006 Conference, organized with the University of Maribor and the University of Ljubljana. The three day conference, from 10 to 12th October, will deal with the theme "Growth of volume – conditions for success".

ISTMA AMERICAS MEETING IN CHICAGO



ISTMA Americas met in Chicago, last 9th September. USA and Canada Delegations were present. Delegations from TMA (Tooling and Manufacturing Association) and PMA (Precision Metalforming Association) has been also present, as guests. The draft for the minute is available for members. The meeting adressed the possible extension of ISTMA memberships to related association.

NTMA FALL CONFERENCE 2006 IN ST LOUIS



NTMA Precision helds the 2006 Fall Conference next October, 18 to 22, in St. Louis, Missouri. “Building a winning team” is the theme of this year conference.

AACHEN INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIM NEXT SEPTEMBER



The aachener werkzeug- und formenbau, a joint business of the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of the RWTH Aachen and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT, will be presenting the latest technical and organizational trends in the tool and die making industry during at the 6 th international Colloquium "Tool and Die Making for the Future" which will take place on September 26 and 27, 2006 in Aachen, Germany.

SOUTH AFRICA AND HOLLAND WELCOMED IN THE ISTMA 2006 ANNUAL MEETING IN FIGUEIRA DA FOZ (PORTUGAL)





Thirty seven people from 20 different countries have been present for the 2006 ISTMA annual meeting in Figueira da Foz (Portugal), last 11 to 13 June.
The three regional branches met during the morning of 12 th June.
In the afternoon the Board od Directors meeting welcomed the new members of ISTMA Europe (South Africa and Holland) and appreciated the current ISTMA business, including an important discussion around proposed changes in ISTMA statutes and membership classes. Country reports have been distributed. Joaquim Menezes, president of ISTMA Europe regional branch, has chaired the meeting, in substitution of Jean Louis Rabourdin, the ISTMA President, that could not been present.

ISTMA BUSINESS CONDITIONS RESULTS IN A NEW FORMAT




Business conditions surveys for Europe are now available in a new format, with extensive use of graphics with the historical time series. Data is reported aggregated for all the Europe and also for each country, including the business conditions indexs and also the index for the trends in each of the seven usual items of analysis (quotes, shipments, backlog, profits, employment, prices). Mouldmakers and diemakers data is presented for each unit of analysis.
The 2005 report is now available, including all the available semesters until the end of 2005. It can be downloadeds from the Statistics page in the members only part of the site.
Last 2005 semester shown a clear improvement in the business conditions index for diemakers and a downward trend for mouldmakers.

INTERNATIONAL MEETING IN SLOVAKIA ABOUT HIGH PRESSURE DIE CASTING

Last April (4th and 5th), Uddeholm Tooling AB has organized in Kosice a seminar for the die casting industry in the growing Slovakia. More than 1 million vehicles are expected to be builted in Slovakia by 2010. Kosice is the second largest city of Slovakia. It is located in the eastern part of this country and it is a booming location for the industry. During two days, more than 40 people, including guest-speakers, partners and participants were able to share their experience and to network through lecturers, face-to-face meetings and visits. 4th EDITION OF THE "MOULDS AND DIE MAKERS DAY" IN ITALY

UCISAP, the ISTMA association from Italy, is organizing a “Mould and die makers day" next 1 April 2006, in cooperation with Senaf, the organizer of Eurostampi Exhibition, that will be held in Parma from 30th March to 1st April.
The program includes three invited presentations by specialists: about the innovation in plastics european sector, about the financial valuation of tool and die companies and also about the importance of business networks. The award "The mould of the year" will be announced during the event by the STAMPI magazine.

A report about the web sites of all the ISTMA associations has been released. The study was authored by a team of University of Minho (Portugal) that had a look at the contents of the public pages of the websites. ISTMA ASIA / FADMA MEETING IN CHENNAI (INDIA)

The Asia regional branch of ISTMA met last 3rd March, in Chennai, India. The meeting was organized by TAGMA, the ISTMA association from India, to be coincident with Diemould India 2006, the 5th Die and Mould International Exhibition, also organized by TAGMA. The exhibition attracted more than 150 exhibitors from India and worldwide. Read more

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MET IN JOENSUU (FINLAND)

ISTMA Executive Committe met last 30th January in Joensuu, the Finish city in the Carelia plastic and metal region where the next ISTMA World Congress will be held next year (2007). The meeting was hosted by Teknologia teollisuus, the ISTMA association from Finland, and by IMTEC, a research institute (www.imtec.net). The committee discussed the planning and program for next World Congress, the 2005 financial report and 2006 budget, the issues associated to the incorporation of ISTMA in Europe and also new membership policies. MOULDS EVENT 2006 (PORTUGAL)



Centimfe (the Technology Center for Mouldmaking, Special Tooling and Plastic Industries), based in Portugal and Cefamol, the portuguese association for the mould industry, are organizing the Moulds Event 2006, a week full of activities, from 13 th to 17th November 2006. Activities will be held both in Marinha Grande and Oliveira de Azemeis. TRADE MISSION TO INDIA



Cefamol - The Portuguese Mouldmaking Association will undertake between February 24 and March 4 a Trade Mission to India, within the framework of the initiative ”Engineering & Tooling from Portugal”.
Mission objectives are to know the local Tooling Industry and to identify opportunities of cooperation between companies and institutions of this sector in both countries. Visits will be undertaken to local companies in the region of Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai. A visit to the the International Fair “Die & Mould India”, in Chennai, is included.
Cefamol is organizing this visit in cooperation with TAGMA - Tool and Gauge Manufacturers Association, from India. TAGMA is also member of ISTMA.

SPECIAL TOOLING AND MACHINING SEMINAR IN FINLAND



Teknologia teollisuus, the Finish association, has organized a two day seminar for the precision industry companies, last 26th and 27th January 2006, in the city of Naantali, with 150 participants.
The program comprised of presentations and discussions around the new challenges in the main industries related to the die and mould industries (automotive, electronics, medical, ...) and the new strategies for the future. The latest developments in the tooling processes and the prospects of the emerging markets in St. Petersburg and Russia were also be discussed.

ISTMA CONFERENCE 2007 CALL FOR PAPERS



Presentations concerning the latest developments in technology, R&D and market trends are encouraged to apply for the next ISTMA World Conference, to be held in Joensuu (Finland) from 11th to 13th of June 2007. 10th INTERNATIONAL PATTERN AND MODEL MAKING CONGRESS



AFIM, the French Association of the Mould, Pattern and Model Making Industry, is the host of the 10th International Pattern and Model Making Congress, to be held on Paris, next 14th to 16th June 2005. KOREA: 3D CAD CONTEST AND VISITS TO EUROPE AND USA

KODMIC, the ISTMA association from Korea, will be holding the 2nd College Student 3-D CAD Contest at the Yuhan College on Sep. 10, 2005. The contest is divided into the 3-dimensional mold design and the 3-dimensional press design. The students of the departments of mold/die/tool or the relevant departments at the two-year colleges or above level are qualified to take part in this event with the recommendation of the dean of the department. Important prizes will be awarded.
A KODMIC delegation will visit the North American market during from 13 to 23 October, including the Hyundai Motor plant (in Alabama). Another delegation of 26 companies will be present in the next Euromould 2005 event, in Frankfurt, and will visit the French market after the fair. Read more

MMADA NEW PRESIDENT ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF NEW DIRECTORY

Mr. Choong Yuke Sang has been elected for the current term as President of MMADA, the ISTMA association from Malasya. Meanwhile MMADA has released a new edition (the 4th) of the Malaysia Mould and Die Directory. "The Malaysia’s mould and die industry has experienced rapid growth in tandem with the overall growth of the Malaysia’s manufacturing sector. This issue of the MMADA Directory will serve as an ideal reference directory for advancing the cause of the mould and die industry in Malaysia and it will also help in projecting the capabilities of the members of MMADA to the world", said the new President about the new directory. By invitation from the Portuguese Presidency and CEFAMOL, representatives from the Polish and the Hungarian associations were present as observers at the last ISTMA Europe meeting, held in Brno (CZ). PORTUGAL WILL HOLD THE PRESIDENCY AND SECRETARIAT OF ISTMA EUROPE

Portugal will hold the Presidency and Administration of ISTMA Europe (2005 to 2008), as well as the executive management of ISTMA World. ISTMA associations are organised into three divisions– ISTMA Americas, ISTMA Asia and ISTMA Europe – representing 24 Associations from moulds, special tools and precision machining industries. ISTMA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETS IN PARIS

ISTMA President, Jean Louis Rabourdin, chaired the Executive meeting of ISTMA Board of Directors, last 14th February, in Paris. The committee approved the ISTMA budget for 2005 and the transfer of ISTMA secretariat from NTMA (USA) to Cefamol (Portugal). Issues about ISTMA statistics and the preparation of the next Word Conference in Finland and the next ISTMA Board of directors meeting in Australia have been discussed, as well statutory issues. The Executive Committee also thanked Mr. Thomas Garcia for his outstanding service as ISTMA general manager from 1999 to 2004.
Paris meeting has been hosted by AFIM, the French ISTMA association, that arranged a visit to CEFIM (www.cefim.fr) on 15th February.
